It’s that time of year where you need no excuse to get home, snuggle up with your favourite tea blend, wooly socks on feet and pick up a great book, so I’ve put together my favourite top 10 ultimate #Girlboss bibles. Trust me, you’ll have a hard time putting them down (so this article is pretty timely given the fact that it’s now pitch black by 5pm!). Tip: swap your nightly workout for a lazy evening, and try getting up a little earlier in the morning to get your sweat on – it’s lighter and warmer that way.
#GIRLBOSS – SOPHIA AMORUSO
If you haven’t read this book, stop what you’re doing – even stop reading this blog – and download it now. Then come back. Bought it? OK good – I don’t want to spoil it for you so all I’ll say is; this baddass chick went from selling her first item (which happened to be stolen) to making over eight figures, all from her bedroom whilst wearing a dressing gown. She was dubbed the “Cinderella of Tech” by The New York Times, not because of her technological genius, but because of her success on social media.
DARING & DISRUPTIVE – LISA MESSENGER
If you haven’t heard of Lisa Messenger before, check out her beautiful Instagram account to get you interested! This boss lady has a collection of books (of course all of the AiS girls have read them), but this one in particular is my fav of hers. Why? It was a game-changer for her world. Lisa shares her rollercoaster ride as the creator and founder of global magazine ‘Collective Hub’, (if you haven’t read or heard of it before, it’s an inspiration for disrupters and innovators of all stripes—with bold ideas on how you can stay on track and remain true to whatever your passion may be). It’s a no brainer why this is her best selling book. Enjoy babes, and you’re welcome for the introduction to her.
MONEY & MINDFULNESS / MONEY & MINDFULNESS PLAYBOOK- LISA MESSENGER
You want to be ambitious, loving, successful and compassionate – and most of all happy, right? Messenger’s books usually take me just an hour to read because I CANNOT put them down. In this book, she talks about money, which is often a taboo subject (unless we’re complaining to our friends about the lack of bank balance the week before pay-day). It covers what would you do if money was no object, as well as her insightful, authentic account of her own money journey, and how this serial entrepreneur learned to embrace it for freedom, choice and a platform for good. Money & Mindfulness is supposed to be read in tandem with her playbook, which is meant to be less like doing homework and more like an exercise to get you thinking about creating road maps for your dream life. I did this and I highly recommend it – it’s awesome looking back to what I wrote last year to see how far I’ve really come.
THRIVE – ARIANA HUFFINGTON
A lot of us can really relate to Ariana in some shape or form, as we continue to work ridiculous hours and pack so much into our schedule that we find ourselves zoning out of life’s little pleasures due to exhaustion. Her book inspires you to avoid ending up where she did – which was knocked out cold after hitting her head on the coffee table as a result of burnout. As the Co-Founder and Editor-in-Chief of the Huffington Post and one of the most influential women in the world, I found all of her advice in this book very inspiring and I’m sure you will too. She draws on the latest groundbreaking research and scientific findings in the fields of psychology, sports, sleep and physiology that show the profound and transformative effects of meditation, mindfulness, unplugging and giving.
LEAN IN – SHERYL SANDBERG
Sheryl is the definition of a fierce lady boss – she’s a technology executive, dedicated activist, and talented author who produced an absolute favourite memoir of mine. All of these things make her one of my top idols to date. As of September 2014, she held the position of Chief Operating Officer of Facebook before serving as the VP of Global Online Sales for Google. Read on and find what makes her tick.
THE NORDSTORM WAY TO CUSTOMER SERVICE EXCELLENCE – ROBERT SPECTOR AND PATRICK D MCCARTHY
I was hesitant at first to read this one, as it seemed more like a textbook rather than an easy read for my tube home, but being one of the only five companies to make Fortune’s “best companies to work for,” I wanted to see what made them gain this accolade. No matter what field you’re in, from finance, retail, marketing, or blogging, The Nordstrom Way will show you how you should tactfully model your business.
SECRETS OF SIX FIGURE WOMEN – BARBARA STANNY
Has the title got you interested already? Yeah, it got me too! Girl bosses are taking over the world and you could just be the next one. Quietly and steadily, the number of six plus figure women is increasing and continues to confidently rise at a rate faster than men. This book tells you all about the strategies you can use in any industry, whether you’re a corporate executive or a freelance blogger.
THE DEFINING DECADE 20 – DR MEG JAY
I’m actually only half way through this one, but I’m already hooked! My mum suggested it to me… What are you trying to say mum? In all seriousness though, this book has got me really thinking about just how crucial the decade between your teenage years and 30 something really is. For a super quick summary, this book is basically about why your 20’s matter, and how you can make the most of them.
THE UNIVERSE HAS YOUR BACK – GABRIELLE BERNSTEIN
Another book recommended by my mother – this one is sitting in my Kindle library ready to be started after I finish The Defining Decade (I’m trying this new thing whereby I don’t start another book until I have completed the other. A good habit to get in to). Apparently, this book teaches you how to transform fear into faith to live a divinely guided life, and will help you learn to stop chasing life and truly “live”.
BY INVITATION ONLY – HOW WE BUILT GILT AND CHANGED THE WAY MILLIONS SHOP – ALEXIS MAYBANK AND ALEXANDRA WILKIS WILSON
I just love a good startup success story, don’t you? Especially when women are behind it. Alexis Maybank, Alexandra Wilkis Wilson, alongisde three others, launched Gilt in 2007 with one idea – to bring sample sales online and change the way millions shop. They talk about their struggles with conflicting needs of their suppliers, engineers, marketers and potential investors, and their dark moments of expanding and growing, which all paid off as they are now valued at $1 billion!
